Course Description

The Advanced Diploma qualification covers workers who integrate knowledge of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care into broader aspects of management and community development, contributing to policy-making and decision making across the spectrum of service delivery.

Occupational titles for these workers may include, for example:

  • Manager (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health)
  • Specialist health worker (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health)

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health work is an emerging area of work and occupational titles for those working in this area vary according to jurisdictional and workplace requirements.

Pre-requisite requirements

Workers seeking enrolment in or credit for this qualification must:

  • have extensive background experience (at least 2 years) in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care, including delivery of comprehensive primary health care services to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients and communities; and
  • be able to demonstrate current competence in the compulsory competency units required for Diploma of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care (Community Care)

Who should enrol for this course?

Enrolment within this course will focus on recruiting students from the following in order:
New and existing workers working in an Aboriginal community setting with Aboriginal clients and communities without prior qualifications and needing to gain at least an entry level qualification.

Aboriginal Workers seeking a career transition with appropriate workplace access and life experience.

Community members seeking to enter the workforce especially if sponsored by a member service

Units of Competency

Compulsory units

Listed below are the eight core units that are required for this qualification, plus the mandatory electives as per the Packaging Rules for this qualification:

  • HLTAHW603A Develop work plans
  • HLTAHW604A Develop health care policy
  • BSBMGT605A Provide leadership across the organisation
  • BSBMGT607A Manage knowledge and information
  • BSBMGT608A Manage innovation and continuous improvement
  • HLTAHW605A Manage human resources
  • HLTAHW520A Coordinate community health research

Elective units

The following competency units may be relevant electives for both qualifications:

  • Advanced Diploma of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care
  • (Practice)
  • Advanced Diploma of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health (Community Care)
  • Additional electives may be selected in line with the Packaging Rules for each qualification.

Electives selected must:

  • not be compulsory competency units specified for this qualification
  • be different from competency units that have contributed to a lower level qualification
  • build on pre-requisites where specified.

Please note

  • Certain elective competency units may be specified as mandatory for specific work.
  • Employers may specify that they prefer (or require) staff to have certain elective competency units for specific work roles.

In addition, as this particular offering of this qualification is focused on the Aboriginal Social and Emotional Wellbeing and Alcohol and Other Drug workforce the Training Package Guidelines and Packaging rules have been adhered to in packaging electives and recommended units selected.

Recommended electives for social and emotional well being work

Employers may specify the following electives as mandatory for work at the Advanced Diploma level with a focus on social and emotional well being.

  • HLTAHW508A Develop a healing framework for social and emotional well being work
  • HLTAHW607A Provide guidance in social and emotional well being
  • HLTAHW608A Practice social and emotional well being in a clinical setting
  • HLTAHW609A Provide closure on healing processes

These competency units build on electives recommended for work at the Diploma level with a focus on social and emotional well being.  Sample electives are listed below and grouped for ease of access. Electives may be selected from any group and employers may specify that their employees should be competent in particular groupings of electives.

  • CHCYTH3C Support young people to address their circumstances
  • CHCYTH4C Support young people in crisis

  • CHCCHILD2C Support the rights and safety of children within duty of care requirements

Mental health, AOD and associated electives — for example:

  • CHCAOD11A Provide advanced interventions to meet the needs of clients with alcohol and/or other drug issues
  • CHCMH4B Provide non-clinical services to people with mental health issues
  • CHCMH8A Provide interventions to meet the needs of consumers with mental health and AOD issues

The elective units chosen for this pathway are:

  • HLTAHW508A Develop a healing framework for social and emotional well being work
  • HLTAHW608A Practice social and emotional well being in a clinical setting
  • HLTAHW613A Work within a narrative approach
  • CHCCSL601A Work within a structured counselling process
  • HLTAHW609A Provide closure on healing processes
  • CHCCSL602A Facilitate the counselling relationship
  • CHCCSL603A Provide support for clients implementing a course of action
  • CHCCSL604A Reflect and improve upon counselling skills

This qualification also offers potential articulation to University qualifications and specifically Charles Sturt University and the University of Wollongong. As a result these Institutions Higher Education requirements have been considered in developing the electives and the associated assessments.

This qualification can also be offered more generically to students who meet the pre-requisite requirements for this qualification. In such circumstances the electives will be chosen to meet workplace community and student need and demand and will be offered in lieu of the SEWB and AOD electives blocks.
