Course Catalogue: Advanced Diploma of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care (Practice)
Course Description
The Advanced Diploma qualification covers workers who integrate knowledge of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care into broader aspects of management and community development, contributing to policy-making and decision- making across the spectrum of service delivery.
Occupational titles for these workers may include, for example:
- Manager (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health)
- Specialist health worker (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health)
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health work is an emerging area of work and occupational titles for those working in this area vary according to jurisdictional and workplace requirements.
Pre-requisite requirements
Workers seeking enrolment in or credit for this qualification must:
- have extensive background experience (at least 2 years) in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care, including delivery of comprehensive primary health care services to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients and communities; and
- be able to demonstrate current competence in the compulsory competency units required for Diploma of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care (Practice).
Who should enrol for this course?
Enrolment within this course will focus on recruiting students from the following in order:
- New and existing workers working in an Aboriginal community setting r with Aboriginal clients and communities without prior qualifications and needing to gain at least an entry level qualification.
- Aboriginal Workers seeking a career transition with appropriate workplace access and life experience.
- Community members seeking to enter the workforce especially if sponsored by a member service

Elective units
- Please note that elective units recommended for Advanced Diploma of Aboriginal and/or
- Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care (Practice) are the same as those presented for
- Advanced Diploma of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health (Community Care).
Therefore students within this course may pick up the elective blocks and common core blocks with the Advanced Diploma of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health (Community Care).
Elective blocks have therefore been left open to a range of options depending in workplace context and what is being offered at each intake offering. Elective packaging will always meet Training Package packaging rule requirements.
This qualification may also offer potential articulation to University qualifications and specifically Charles Sturt University and the University of Wollongong. As a result these Institutions Higher Education requirements have been considered in developing the electives and the associated assessments.
This qualification can also be offered more generically to students who meet the pre-requisite requirements for this qualification. In such circumstances the electives will be chosen to meet workplace community and student need and demand and will be offered in lieu of the SEWB and AOD electives blocks.
